New York State to Provide $100 Economic Support Payment to Low-Income Families with Children

“100 dollars is 100 dollars,” said Fabio Vásquez.

If you are a resident of New York State, have minor children, and qualify as a low-income person, you may be eligible to receive this extra help, as Governor Kathy Hochul announced this week that the state has $12 million in federal funds to deliver a one-time Family Economic Support payment to low-income families with children.

The fund is administered by the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and is part of the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund.

Approximately $100 will be given to approximately 120,000 households with children under 17 years of age who receive Public Assistance.

On the streets of Washington Heights we find diverse opinions about aid:

“Yes, it seems good to me because imagine, there are families that are very large and need that fund, especially now that they are giving help to the undocumented. It is good that they also give help to the families that need it,” said Rita Cortez.

“What does 100 dollars do? It makes no difference for a family, but nevertheless they do use it for transportation, for transit it does make a difference,” added Miriam Lara.

“The majority of people who are poor have needs and really need that help,” said Juan Acosta.

Others reiterated how expensive it is to go to the market.

“The basic basket is too expensive, you go to the supermarket with 50 dollars and it is in a small bag that you carry. That is, any help is welcome,” said Erecida Lora.

“You know that one goes now with 100 dollars and one brings it in two shopping bags. Before, you would fill a cart, but right now, how is the economic situation…”, Vásquez added.

Additionally, Governor Hochul commented that, thanks to the success in providing support from the Federal Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund to the most vulnerable residents, New York qualified for additional funds that were not used by other states.

These aids began to be issued on October 17.

If you meet the aforementioned requirements, pay close attention to your email, as eligible families will be notified by that means.
