New York State Sees Increase in COVID Cases and Hospital Admissions

NEW YORK — Masks may not be as common as they used to be, but that doesn’t mean COVID-19 is completely behind us.

New York State is reporting an increase in COVID cases and hospital admissions of late. The state Department of Health released a report Wednesday indicating that hospital admissions were up 22% week-over-week, averaging more than 100 admissions per day.

There was also a 55% increase in reported cases from the previous week, as the state has an average of 824 reported cases each day, according to the health department.

“As we once again see a rise in COVID-19 cases in the state, I urge all New Yorkers to remember that COVID is a treatable disease,” said New York Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “COVID tests are easy to use and very accurate. If you test positive, talk to a healthcare provider about treatment, which can prevent hospitalization and death.”

Although health officials said there are currently no concerns regarding hospital bed capacity, they urge New Yorkers to be careful. And even though the levels are nowhere near the peak levels they were during the pandemic, health officials urged those at higher risk of infection to take precautions.
