In the state of New York, 630 people infected with the novel coronavirus died within 24 hours. This is the highest increase in the number of victims in a day, said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday. A total of 3565 people in the state have now died from the lung disease Covid-19 caused by the virus.

The number of infected people in the state increased to just under 114,000, which is only around 6,000 fewer than in the whole of Italy. With a total of more than 278,000 infected, the USA is the country with the most cases of infection worldwide. There are more than 63,000 corona cases in New York City alone. According to Governor Cuomo, 85,000 volunteers have volunteered to help fight the coronavirus in the state.

The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, called on all trained professionals in the city to help out in the hospitals. “To everyone who has not yet participated in this fight – we need you,” he said in a video that was circulated on Twitter. His appeal is addressed to doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists. According to the mayor, the city will need 45,000 additional skilled workers in April and May to combat the corona pandemic.
