New York State Public Utilities Commission Announces Plan to Increase Rates for Con Edison Customers

The New York State Public Utilities Commission has established a new plan to increase rates over the next three years for Con Edison electric and gas customers.

The increases, they assured, would benefit customers and would take effect in August (the original proposal from Con Edison, they said, was for higher increases).

Edgar Carrión tells us that the person affected is always the consumer.

“The company is the one that makes the ticket, they don’t care about the consumer. What they want is to raise taxes every day and let the consumer take it by golly,” said Carrión.

And it tells us that sometimes it is useless to try to save.

“They always come with a high rate even if you don’t use the light, even if you don’t turn on an air conditioner,” added Carrión.

The increase would be applied as follows:

An average user who uses about 600 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will see their bill increase by $14.44 in August.

In January 2024, the same user will see an additional 4.2% hike, about $7.20 more.

In January 2025, that customer’s bill will increase again by 1.4%, or about $2.43 more.

On the other hand, a user of the gas service that uses 100 therms of gas per month will see an increase in their bill of about $17.28 in August.

In January 2024 that same customer will see an additional 6.7% increase, about $14.90 more.

In January 2025, that customer’s bill will increase again by 6.6%, some $15.61 more.

The agreement includes, according to what was said, the development of an Energy Resources Distribution Program for customers with less ability to pay.

Jesús Cruz, who was on his way to work, said that he no longer has enough for more.

Cruz.

“This thing about raising things and not salaries is something that you really don’t know what to do,” Cruz said.

Improvements will also be made to the distribution network as part of the commitment requires Con Edison to replace 240 miles of leak-prone pipelines over the next three years.

In addition to the implementation of new clean energy alternatives.

María Concepción Rangel tells us about the impact that this increase causes in the home.

“I have my children, I’m a single mother, I have to pay for everything and it’s unfair,” Rangel said.

Rangel.

Julio Ray tells us that there is no alternative. And it is that this comes just at the moment when the heat hits our region,

“Summer is when much more energy is consumed by the heat and there is no other option.”

So we have no choice but to try to save on the electricity bill in order to minimize the impact on New Yorkers’ pockets.
