NEW YORK, Jan.23 (Xinhua) – The total number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 reached 8,802 on Friday in New York state, from 8,846 on Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted on Saturday.

Of the 262,106 COVID-19 tests carried out in the state on Friday, 13,786 were positive, or 5.26% of the total, down from 5.65% the day before, Cuomo said, adding that the number of deaths rose to 144 on Friday, from 165 on Thursday.

“COVID has shown us the dark side of America. It has exposed racism, disparities and inequalities,” the governor wrote in another tweet. “In New York State, we will ensure that no New Yorkers are left behind in the distribution of the vaccine.”

Also on Saturday, Cuomo visited a vaccination site at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), announcing the state’s determination to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of vaccines.

At noon on Saturday, the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering reported 41,974 deaths from the coronavirus in New York state, the nation’s worst-hit.
