Some New York homeowners are already receiving a check from the state, which is the tax refund creditwhich will continue to be distributed in the coming weeks.

The Homeowners Tax Refund Credit (HTRC) is a one-year program that provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners. The check will only be given for this year.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance has already begun mailing checks to 2.5 million homeowners statewide.

State Governor Kathy Hochul said this is the largest refund ever.

This payment is in addition to the STAR program, which is also known as the School Tax Relief Payment, and which this year will be given in advance..

Remember, to qualify for the HTRC rebate, the homeowner must:

– Be eligible for a STAR 2022 credit or exemption
–Have income less than or equal to $250,000 dollars for tax year 2020
–Have a school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than the STAR benefit

The amount of the credit depends on the location of the home and the income of each household, as well as whether the owner receives basic or enhanced STAR.

You do not need to apply anywhere to receive supportas the state Department of Taxation and Finance will use tax returns to determine who meets the above criteria.

Since HTRC program checks are separate from STAR rebate checks, you will be able to see which program issued the payment on the check stub.

The state expects most checks to be mailed this June. Anyone who is eligible and does not receive their check by early July can expect to receive it before their school tax bill is due.
