New York stair system under fire again after suicide

The Vessel, the controversial staircase system in New York, is again under fire after a new suicide.

The Vessel in Manhattan—which common New Yorkers call “The Giant Shawarma” or sometimes a “stairway to nowhere”—opened in 2019 in Hudson Yards. After four suicides, the call to tear down the structure is getting louder.

The latest victim was a 14-year-old boy. He jumped down Thursday and did not survive the fall. Break down the Vessel, writes Curbed. According to the website, which specializes in urban planning and real estate, the structure has since become known as a ‘place of death’.

During the pandemic, The Vessel was mostly closed, partly due to a number of suicides. The attraction was reopened two months ago, with a number of measures to reduce the risks.

For example, entry was initially free, now it has become 10 dollars. You can’t go alone anymore. But the railings were not raised despite the demand of experts.

The developer is now investigating how to proceed.
