An employee of the Israeli consulate in New York, Yonatan Maimon, 24, is charged with attempted murder. Yonatan is the son of former Ariel Sharon collaborator Israel Maimon. He is accused of attacking a 42-year-old man in the head with a large glass jug outside a nightclub in Soho about a week ago.
The victim was transported to the hospital and suffers from a cerebral hemorrhage and cuts. The consulate employee was released on $25,000 bail. Prior to the attack, he had also smashed the window of a passing taxi. If found guilty, he could be imprisoned for up to 25 years.
According to the allegations, the assaulted man and the consulate employee had a verbal confrontation inside the club. The victim then left the nightclub and was assaulted while standing at the pedestrian crossing.
The attacker was seen on security cameras before and after the attack, and photos released by police show him shirtless, holding the broken jug in his hand after the attack.
His father, Israel Maimon, was elected legal adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s cabinet on June 19, 2002, then government spokesman on March 4, 2003, and Ariel Sharon’s chief of staff from 2003 to 2006.
