New York: second day of power outage at JFK airport

NEW YORK — A power outage interfered Friday, for the second day in a row, with operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Passengers have found themselves with nowhere to go when flights have been canceled or diverted to other destinations.

Airport officials tweeted late Thursday that Terminal 1, which handles international flights, would remain closed on Friday “due to electrical issues.” They advised travelers to do their homework before traveling.

The outage was attributed to a small fire that broke out in an electrical panel, officials said. The flames were quickly extinguished.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages major New York airports, said it is trying to send affected flights to the airport’s other four terminals.

But some planes had to turn back. An Air New Zealand plane had crossed two-thirds of the Pacific when it was forced to return to Auckland. He finally landed in New Zealand after 16 hours of flight.

The Port Authority did not provide an update Friday.

Terminal 1 was inaugurated in the late 1990s. It is to be replaced by a new US$9.5 billion terminal which is under construction, but work has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
