NEW YORK, Oct.4 (Reuters) – Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York, announced on Sunday that he would order the closure of businesses deemed non-essential and schools in several areas of the city identified as hotbeds contamination with COVID-19.
These measures, which have yet to get the green light from New York State, will concern nine areas where the rate of positivity to the virus has soared, sometimes due to the lack of compliance with social distancing rules. Eleven other areas where this rate is increasing will be placed under surveillance.
If Governor Andrew Cuomo approves these containment measures, all non-essential businesses in Brooklyn and Queens will have to close, as will restaurants and schools, whether public or private.
“We have to contain the situation and we will without a doubt avoid a second wave,” Bill de Blasio told a press conference. (Barbara Goldberg; French version Nicolas Delame)
