New York: Roller skaters make their rounds at Rockefeller Center

There were already tennis courts, shows and of course the well-known ice rink at the famous Rockefeller Center. Now, for the first time in decades, New Yorkers are allowed to put on their roller skates.

Ice skates off, roller skates on: The world-famous ice rink at Rockefeller Center in New York has been converted into a roller rink for the warmer season for the first time in around 80 years.

At the opening on Friday, dozens of people did their laps on the track in sunny spring weather and music. There were free courses for beginners. The roller rink is to remain in the middle of Manhattan until October 22nd. Adult tickets cost around $20.

During the winter months, the facility, which was first built for Christmas 1936, attracts hundreds of thousands to the ice surface. In the summer months it has only been used as a roller skating rink once in 1940. Meanwhile, in the warmer months, there were tennis courts, restaurants, flower shows and concerts, among other activities.
