New York records first cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus

The US state of New York has registered the first cases of the Omikron variant of the coronavirus. “New York State has confirmed five cases of the Omicron variant,” said Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday (local time) on Twitter. That brought the total number of confirmed cases in the United States to eight. The authorities had previously found two cases in California and one in Minnesota.

On Friday, Australia also reported the first case of the new virus variant that was not related to a trip abroad. According to the health authorities of the state of New South Wales, this is a student in Sydney who had neither recently made an overseas trip nor had any contact with returning travelers. In Australia, nine Omicron cases had been detected by then, but all of them in travelers who came from abroad. However, the latest discovery suggests that the virus variant first found in South Africa is already in circulation in Australia.
