New York –
A 23-meter (75-foot) tall Norwegian fir arrived at Rockefeller Center in New York City on Saturday to be used as one of the world’s most famous Christmas trees.
NBC’s “Today” show showed the tree being transported by truck early Saturday morning. Later a crane lifted it in its place.
The tree will be decorated in the coming weeks and its more than 5 miles of lights will be turned on in a ceremony at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, according to NBC, which broadcasts the event. In-person viewers will not be allowed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the network added.
The tree was donated by Al Dick of Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta, in downtown New York.
Tishman Speyer, the company that owns Rockefeller Center, has said that it is especially proud to uphold the tree tradition this year. The pandemic has caused the cancellation of some other New York Christmas customs, such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. (AND)
