The former apartment of Swedish actress Greta Garbo, in the east of Manhattan in New York, is looking for a buyer at 7.25 million dollars.

A Swedish actress recognized in Hollywood and passionate about art

Considered one of the greatest actresses of all time, Greta Garbo got her start in silent films and went on to become one of MGM’s highest-grossing stars. The Swedish-born star was known for his melancholic and dark side, and famous for his tragic personas and understated performances. Her portrayal of a consumptive courtesan in Le roman de Marguerite Gautier (Camille) in 1936 is often considered her finest work. She was nominated for three Oscars and received an honorary Oscar in 1954.

Never having enjoyed the Hollywood lifestyle, Garbo retired at the age of 35, turning down every opportunity to return to the screen. She led a private life, shunning publicity, and amassed an art collection that sold for millions at her death.

Apartment relisted for the modest sum of 7.25 million dollars

Garbo’s apartment on Manhattan’s East Side, where the enigmatic actress spent her long retirement, is on the market again for $7.25 million according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Last sold for $8.5 million in 2017 after a fierce bidding war, the home retains many of Garbo’s furnishings and personal touches, but includes a kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and living room. HVAC system recently renovated.

3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an equipped kitchen and a view of the East River

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment has floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular views of the East River, which reminded Garbo of his native Stockholm.

The massive kitchen connects to a formal dining area and includes a Miele fridge/freezer, five-burner Thermador range with hob and oven, and a custom maple center island.

Wood paneled walls adorn the living room, Garbo’s favorite space, which includes a gas fireplace and adjoining office. French doors at the end open to a lovely balcony cooled by breezes from the river.

The first bedroom features walls and a headboard in the pink color Fortuny silk, dear to Garbo, while the second bedroom includes a pink and green color V’Soske rug designed by the film star.

A third bedroom is currently converted into an office, with its own bathroom.

The house offers large storage spaces, as well as separate laundry rooms and utility rooms.

A building that has hosted prestigious families and celebrities

The apartment is located in the legendary Campanile building, famous for the superior level of service and discretion it offers its VIP residents. Other celebrities who call this exclusive building home include Ethel Barrymore, Rex Harrison and members of the billionaire Rothschild and Heinz families.

View of the city’s emblematic monuments

Directly next to the East River, the building is within walking distance of the River Club of New York and the Sutton East Tennis Club, as well as the ferry to Roosevelt Island. With a skyline dominated by iconic skyscrapers including the Empire State Building and the art deco Chrysler Building, Mid-Town East is home to the advertising giants of Madison Avenue, the architectural destination of Grand Central Terminal, the luxury shops of 5th Avenue and the headquarters of the United Nations. With its central location, it’s easy to access all that Manhattan has to offer.

Brian K. Lewis of Compass, New York, NY is the realtor in charge of the apartment.
