New York Readies Closings of Schools, Places of Worship, and Businesses Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases

He New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, pointed out this Wednesday that there will be restrictions on certain ‘strong’ points in the contagion of coronavirus in the state, including the closing of businesses, places of worship and schools.

The rules will go into effect no later than Friday in parts of Brooklyn and Queens, sections of Orange and Rockland counties north of the city and an area within Binghamton near the Pennsylvania border.

Planned restrictions include non-essential school and business closures in some areas. Others would see limits in meetings and in restaurants.

Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, criticized what it said was a “surprise” move and the 10-person limit in red zones, noting that religious practices were under attack. Cuomo said it is about “protecting people and saving lives.”

In New York City, about 11,600 people have tested positive since Sept. 1, compared with fewer than 7,400 in August. In early April, 5,000 to 6,000 people or more tested positive each day when there were fewer tests.

The city has been averaging about four COVID-19 deaths a day since Sept. 1, compared to nearly 550 a day in April.
