A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck New York and New Jersey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center announced today.
The earthquake had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, according to EMSC.
New York Gov. Kathy Hotchul said her team is assessing the impact and any damage that may have been caused, and citizens will receive updates throughout the day.
The epicenter was located about 4.5 miles northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, according to the US Geological Survey.
The last corresponding earthquake in the area took place on September 5, 1944 and had a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale.
However, very few earthquakes have occurred in the last 20 years in the New York area, and those that have occurred have been of very low intensity. This is also the reason why today’s earthquake caused so much panic among the residents.
Social media users have shared posts citing various cities where the tremor was felt, including New Jersey, Virginia and Philadelphia, Boston.
