The former coach of the Vegas Golden Knights is now behind the gang at the New York Rangers. At the World Cup in Riga, he led Canada to the world title.

The New York Rangers are about to sign 57-year-old Gerard Gallant as their new head coach. This was recently reported by several media outlets, although an official report from the club is still pending. Gallant recently coached Team Canada at the World Championships in Riga and won the world championship title despite a difficult start. In the NHL, Gallant was most recently behind the gang he coached from 2017 to 2020 at the Vegas Golden Knights. In their 2017-18 premiere season, he led Vegas straight into the Stanley Cup final, which was lost 4-1 to the Washington Capitals. This season, the Canadian received the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year. With Vegas he had a record of 270-216-51 and was fired there in January 2020. He took a break until his engagement as head coach of Team Canada this year. Other positions as head coach in the NHL have so far been the Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers. As a player, Gallant spent 11 seasons in the NHL, collecting 480 points (211 goals, 269 assists) in 615 games for the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning. Gallant replaces his predecessor David Quinn, who coached the Blueshirts for the past three seasons when they changed, but was unable to lead the team into the playoffs.
