WASHINGTON – Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves and the New York Rangers beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 at Capital One Arena on Friday.
The Rangers now lead the first round series 3-0. The Capitals face elimination on Sunday.
« [Shesterkin] has been there all year,” said Mika Zibanejad, author of two assists. “His brilliance tonight was important for us. »
Vincent Trocheck backed up his goalie with a goal and an assist in the win. Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow also scored for the New Yorkers.
John Carlson was the only scorer for the Capitals. Charlie Lindgren stopped 19 shots. Washington was unable to capitalize on its six power play opportunities.
“We have a lot of difficulty playing the game. […] He showed on the power play,” Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said.
Carlson opened the scoring at 5:34 of the first period after taking a pass from TJ Oshie on a rush, then firing a seemingly innocuous wrist shot from the top of the slot.
Kreider tied the game just 34 seconds later by deflecting a Zibanejad shot.
“We were able to execute some opportunities that we had at key times,” Kreider analyzed. We were a little out of control, but our penalty killing units did a good job and Shesterkin was very good. »
Goodrow’s one short one gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 8:08. Trocheck sent him the puck during overtime that didn’t give Lindgren a chance.
In the second period, Shesterkin made a great save with his right stick to prevent Max Pacioretty from tying the game.
Less than seven minutes later, Trocheck doubled the Rangers’ lead when he finished off a nice exchange with Zibanejad on the power play.
Capitals defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk left the game in the first period with an upper body injury. He was checked against the boards by Matt Rempe, who was penalized for interference.
