New York: Racially motivated 911 – woman is charged

The incident caused a worldwide sensation, the video was clicked millions of times: After a harmless argument with a black man in New York’s Central Park, a white woman calls the police – and thus triggers a debate about racially motivated emergency calls in the USA.

Now the woman is being charged. This was announced by Manhattan’s District Attorney Cy Vance. His office initiated the prosecution because the woman made a false statement when reporting the incident. This is an administrative offense. On October 14, she will answer in court.

The incident occurred on May 25th. An amateur black bird watcher asks a white woman to keep her dog on a leash according to Central Park rules. The woman refuses, calls the police and threatens to report that an African-American man is threatening her life.

A video of the incident that the man’s sister posted on Twitter has now been viewed more than 44 million times.

The woman who called the police showed remorse shortly after the incident. In an interview with NBC, she said she felt threatened and overreacted. She apologized to the man and his family. She lost her job at the investment company Franklin Templeton shortly afterwards, the situation was clear, it said.
