Hydro-Québec received the green light on Thursday from the authorities of the State of New York to supply hydroelectricity to 20% of the needs of the metropolis in the eastern United States.

The New York Public Utilities Commission on Thursday approved the contract between Hydro-Quebec and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. This was the final step on the U.S. side for the state-owned company’s U.S. partner — Transmission Developers — to begin construction of the line in the summer of 2022.
“We can all be proud today. New Yorkers have chosen clean hydroelectricity from Québec to meet 20% of the electricity needs of the largest American metropolis,” pointed out Sophie Brochu, CEO of Hydro-Québec.
545 km of buried line
The Champlain Hudson Power Express project provides for the delivery of 10.4 terawatt hours of electricity over a period of 25 years. This corresponds to the consumption of more than one million households, according to Hydro-Québec estimates. The deal could generate US$30 billion in revenue for the state-owned company.
The project involves the deployment of a 545 km buried end-to-end transmission line to New York City. The line will thus pass under Lake Champlain and, near New York, under the Hudson River.
