The City of New York has unveiled its masterplan to protect an area between Battery and the Brooklyn Bridge from the effects of climate change. A one-kilometre-long plaza would be developed on two levels: a lower level to deal with rising sea levels, and an upper level for extreme events such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The project will create new public spaces, restoring biodiversity, and also includes resilient ferry terminals. Costing between 5 and 7 billion dollars, the project would avoid 1 billion dollars in annual damage by the end of 2050, according to the authors of the masterplan.
