The New York Public Prosecutor’s Office announced its investigation into the real estate company of ex-President Donald Trump in a report Washington Post according to decisively advanced. The newspaper reports that a so-called grand jury was convened in the proceedings. This is a panel of juries that can decide on an indictment in a non-public procedure.
Trump responded immediately, saying it was “a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in American history”. The investigation was politically motivated “and an affront to the nearly 75 million voters who supported me in the presidential election,” he said in a letter published on Tuesday evening.
New York state attorney general Letitia James and Manhattan attorney Cyrus Vance are cooperating in the investigation into Trump and his company. Vance has now called up the grand jury. He had previously fought for Trump’s tax records to be handed over to the Supreme Court in Washington.
Prosecutors suspect that Trump’s company misrepresented the value of its real estate in order to obtain loans or to gain price advantages. Vance is also reportedly investigating hush money payments to women who said they had an affair with Trump. Trump rejects all allegations.
Last week it became known that Attorney General James’ investigation no longer had just a civil but also a criminal component. However, it could be a few months before charges are brought.
