New York: polio disaster alert

Status: 09/10/2022 03:13

The governor of the state of New York has issued a disaster warning. Polio viruses had previously been found in wastewater samples in four districts.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency after polio virus was detected in wastewater samples from four boroughs.

Unvaccinated residents of the metropolis are called upon to be immunized. “With polio, we can’t leave anything to chance,” said Mary Bassett, New York City health commissioner.

Also known as poliomyelitis

Viral poliomyelitis, also known as poliomyelitis, was diagnosed in July in the US state of New York for the first time in nearly ten years.

Polio is an incurable viral disease that often remains asymptomatic, but can also cause flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever, fatigue and nausea. In a small percentage of cases, the virus can enter the nervous system and cause irreversible paralysis.

The disease was once the most feared disease in the United States, with waves of infection affecting an estimated 35,000 people annually. In Germany, the virus was considered eradicated by vaccinations nationwide in the 1960s. In June, the polio virus was also detected in London’s sewage, the first time since the 1980s.
