New York: Police use spot robot dog

The New York police have repeatedly tested a copy of the “robot dog” spot from Boston Dynamics on site. This is reported by the online portal Freedom News, which has also published a longer video on which the robot can be seen. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has since confirmed the operation and points out that robots have been used for decades in certain scenarios, such as hostage-taking or incidents involving dangerous goods. Spot is currently being tested and compared to other models.

Boston Dynamics has been offering Spot for sale since last year for $ 74,500 each. Before that, the company had only caused a stir for years with new videos of its impressively agile robots. In the first tests, the devices documented construction progress and examined dangerous environments, but also experienced creative uses, for example as dancers on stages. According to the manufacturer, the robots have already been used in very different places – power plants, nuclear facilities, factories, construction sites and laboratories. The NYPD, which Spot is now also trying out, is the largest law enforcement agency in the United States.

As the New York Post writes, the robot dog was now used in an armed burglary in New York, in which it was suspected that the perpetrator had barricaded himself. But that did not come true. Spot is therefore equipped with lamps and cameras that enable the people at the control to “see its surroundings in real time”. Thanks to AI technology, he should even be able to find his way around autonomously, it is said, citing the police. There it is assumed that Spot will “save lives, protect people and protect the police”. The NYPD had already used a spot robot in a shootout in October. New York MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has now criticized that such cutting-edge technology for underfunded areas would only be purchased when it came to the police, but never for education, health or living conditions.
