In New York, police shot and killed a man who opened fire on people attending an outdoor Christmas concert. No one in the audience was hit by the wild gunman’s shots. So says Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.

The annual performance took place on the steps in front of Saint John the Divine Cathedral, in Manhattan. “Luckily, because of Covid, it was a much smaller event than usual,” said Shea.
At around 3:45 PM, the performance ended and the spectators began to leave, with some entering the cathedral. It was then that a man began firing in front of the cathedral doors.
Several police officers were on the scene almost immediately. Three officers fired more than 15 rounds at the gunman, who, according to multiple witnesses, yelled “Kill me”, and one of those bullets hit his head. According to Shea, police have a name for a man with a long criminal history, but it will not be released until the shooter is formally identified. The motive is not yet clear.
Two semi-automatic small arms were found on the spot and a little further on a bag with a full jerry can with petrol, cords, cables, various knives, a Bible and adhesive tape. “This man undoubtedly had bad intentions.”
“The officers acted heroically. Thank God no one was hit,” said Commissioner Shea.
