It almost looks like real dogs. On the video of a user shared in this month of July, a machine with a canine appearance wanders alongside a New York police officer. This is a digitalcontraction de digital and of dog. It is a Spot model robot, created by the American company Boston Dynamics.
The machine weighs around thirty kilos, evolves at 5.6 km / h and can communicate, assures the manufacturer. It is controllable up to 1 kilometer, and has 90 minutes of autotomy. The New York police (NYPD) acquired two copies at $75,000 each, the Associated Press reported on April 12. The deployment was scheduled for this summer.

Boston Dynamics claims its Spot robot can “investigate, assess and defuse tense or dangerous situations remotely”. The tool is also customizable as needed, and can even be used to “detect chemical, biological or radiation risks”. For example, its articulated arm can be useful for inspecting abandoned luggage.
Avoid deaths
The forces of order should find their account there. “If you have a barricaded suspect, if you have someone who is inside a building with a weapon, instead of sending the police, you send Digidog”told the American agency Eric Adams, the mayor (Dem) of New York.
New York police had previously tested the animal between 2020 and 2021. It had been rented at the request of former Democratic mayor Bill de Blasio. Internet users but also the New York police reform movement (CPR) then strongly criticized the robot, judging its dystopian technology. The device had finally been removed. According to the NYPD, these robots will never be armed or used to monitor the population.

For its part, the RATP affirms it: it already has its dog robot. Perceval, that’s its name, has been used since November 2021 for the maintenance of the metropolitan network. This machine, of the Spot model, allows, among other things, easier access to narrow galleries.
