New York Police Department Goes Electric: Introducing the Ford Mustang Mach-E Patrol Vehicles

Did you know that the NYPD has over 6,300 police vehicles. Added to that number are now 184 new Ford Mustang Mach-E patrol vehicles. It’s still just a drop in the ocean, but it’s the beginning of the electrification of the police fleet in the largest city in the United States. New York police have agreed to phase out gas-powered vehicles in favor of electric models.

A well-adapted model

For several years, police forces have made the leap into the world of SUVs, because sedans like the Ford Taurus or the Crown Victoria have disappeared from the market. SUVs offer enough space for police officers and passengers. In December, New York City ordered 184 Ford Mustang Mach-E patrol vehicles for various police departments. This first batch of Mustang Mach-E SUVs will be delivered in June and will help New York City police determine how to go all-electric. As the majority of patrollers work within a 20 square km perimeter in the city, the electric car would be well suited to this task. NYPD also recently added 600 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor hybrid SUVs to its fleet. These Ford hybrid models help police handle emergencies in snow and storms. They are much more capable than the current fleet of sedans.

A large fleet to rejuvenate

Currently, the NYPD sedan fleet has 549 SUVs, but that could change quickly. The department has 2,879 SUVs, and in the absence of sedans, that number will only increase. Models like the Mach E could play a bigger role depending on the results of this first test, and other major North American cities are watching what happens in New York. Ford also needs to cross its fingers.
