New York plans tram from Brooklyn to Queens

For years there have been plans to expand the public transport system in New York, and now Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to build a tram line. Over a distance of about 25 kilometers, it should connect the districts of Brooklyn and Queens, as reported by the US media.

This is to alleviate the traffic problems in the big city, the cost of the construction is estimated at around 2.5 billion US dollars. A corresponding subway line would be considerably more expensive, as the city administration announced.

The “Brooklyn Queens Connector” tram will run between Sunset Park in Brooklyn and Astoria, a district in northwest Queens. Much of the route would be along the East River. (A You can find a map of the possible route here.) However, the planners still have to overcome a few hurdles: The exact route has not yet been determined, and the residents still have to agree to the project. The city expects construction to start in 2019 at the earliest and commissioning in 2024.
