The American donut giant is currently renovating the building. The municipality of Amsterdam confirms that a permit application has indeed been received.
“But it still has to be approved,” says Jeff van den Berg of the municipality of Amsterdam.
Restaurant or no restaurant
Whether that will happen remains to be seen. The property is designated as ‘catering type 4’. In other words: a restaurant. That was New York Pizza fatal. The municipality of Amsterdam makes a distinction between restaurants and fast food outlets, precisely to be able to exclude the latter category in parts of the city. This resulted in a lawsuit before the administrative court.
New York Pizza considers itself to be a ‘restaurant’. But the fact that New York Pizza also sells pizza slices to take away led the municipality to win.
Perhaps that whole fight is now starting all over again. Although the permit has not yet been refused, everything at Dunkin’ Donuts also depends on the question: is the Donut Giant a restaurant? For example, table service will be almost mandatory and it is not the intention that too much take-away food is sold.
Seafood Shop
The discussion about fast food restaurants and tourist shops in the city has been heating up lately. In addition to the ‘New York Pizza affair’, The Seafood Shop in Leidsestraat was recently told to close their shop on 5 June because the place attracts too many tourists. For the time being, the case can remain open because the owners have started summary proceedings against the closure.
