New York Philharmonic cancels the 2020/21 season

New York / Berlin (MH) – The New York Philharmonic has canceled all concerts scheduled between January 6 and June 13, 2021. The decision was made in accordance with the health regulations of the US state of New York and on the advice of health officials, the orchestra announced on Tuesday. It is the first time in its 178-year history that the New York Philharmonic has to cancel an entire season. In June, the Philharmonic canceled their concerts planned until January 5, 2021.

“The cancellation of an entire New York Philharmonic season is not only unprecedented – it is devastating, both in its effect on the morale of musicians and audiences and in its profound economic consequences,” said President and CEO Deborah Borda. “We know there was no other choice, but we also know that music makes most sense when it is shared with the audience in a common space.”

Initially, the Philharmonic want to continue their series with free online offers. This includes recordings of performances by small ensembles made up of orchestra members. In the spring, live outdoor concerts are to take place in all five New York districts. “This will not be a quiet season,” said Borda. “We are looking forward to September 2021, when the entire orchestra can come together with our audience again.”
