NEW YORK (JTA) – One person was burned when two firecrackers were thrown from a car during an anti-Zionist altercation in a heavily Jewish New York City business district, police said.
The assault took place Thursday evening, as the Palestinian terror group Hamas and Israel established a ceasefire that took effect overnight.
Videos that circulated on social media appear to have shown other physical altercations between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters in New York City on Thursday.

According to the ADL (Anti-Defamation League), there has been an increase in anti-Semitism in the United States online and on the ground, during the conflict which has seen significant pro-Palestinian and pro-Palestinian protests. -Israelis all over the country. The ADL recorded 193 anti-Semitic incidents in the week following the start of the conflict, up from 131 the previous week.
The ADL noted that there was “a lot of information relating to anti-Jewish attacks” in the city on Thursday evening and that the organization was in contact with the police and the FBI.

The serious unrest in New York City took place around the same time as a pro-Israel protest in New York City, which also drew pro-Palestinian counter-protesters. It took place in the Diamond District, a street in downtown Manhattan that has many Jewish-owned businesses.
In two videos posted to Twitter on Thursday, a group of men wearing Palestinian colors can be seen yelling “fucking Zionists” while waving the Palestinian flag. At the end of one of these sequences, an individual appears to be lying on the ground.

Later in the video, a Propalestinian pushes a man. Propalestinian women, wearing the veil, then walk in the middle of the street, guided by the police.
In another brief video, shot on 47th Street, the sound of an explosion is heard, accompanied by a flash of light and smoke, as part of a stampede. The timeline of the two videos is undetermined.
Altercations with Protestant demonstrators took place in several parts of the city. The customers of a restaurant have, among other things, been victims of assault.
The New York Police Department told the JTA that fireworks had been launched from a car and that a person had been lightly burned. The fire investigation team and investigators are currently reviewing these incidents.

The Israeli consulate in New York said on Friday that the wave of protests had been more violent than what had been seen so far in the area, even when tensions were high.
“The demonstrations are bigger, more toxic and unfortunately more violent. There is a direct link between the agenda set by Hamas, which has vowed to destroy Israel, and the slogans of protests that undermine the legitimacy of the nation-state of Israel, ”the consulate lamented in a statement. declaration.
