The New York Port Authority (which manages ports and also airports) announced that passenger numbers at New York-area airports in November surpassed those before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The New York area includes three major international airports – John F. Kennedy (JFK), Laguardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR) – as well as two other minor airports – Steward (SWF) in the Hudson Valley and Teterboro (TEB) in the New Jersey. In November 2022, New York airports handled a total of 11 million passengers (mostly domestic travelers), or 102% of the passenger volume in November 2019. In October 2022, it was still 98% compared to October 2019 .

Strong demand for air travel in November was driven primarily by domestic travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday, with passengers on domestic flights up 8% compared to the same holiday season in 2019. Demand will remain high, according to the Airport Authority until the end of 2022, in particular in the period from Friday 23 December 2022 to Monday 2 January 2023.

“We are extremely pleased to see our airports returning to pre-pandemic levels after more than two years of a global pandemic that has left us confined to homes and filled with the wanderlust,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’ Toole.
