New York, Mar 22 (EFE) .- New York state residents over 50 will be able to start getting vaccinated starting Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
The authorities in Mississippi and Alaska are the only ones that have so far opened vaccines for all people over the age of 16 and in some counties in Arizona and Michigan, all adults can request an appointment to be immunized.
United States President Joe Biden recently urged all state governments to allow the vaccination of the entire population beginning May 1, a goal to which four states have so far committed: Maine, Virginia, North Carolina and Wisconsin, as well as the district of Washington, according to local press.
During a public appearance, Cuomo also indicated today that 26.1% of New Yorkers have already received the first dose and that 13.4% have completed their immunization against the coronavirus.
Last week, New York began vaccinating public facing officials, as well as NGO workers and essential building services workers who serve the public.
In parallel with the increase in eligibility to receive the vaccine, the state is also progressively lifting many of the restrictive measures that were imposed to contain the expansion of the covid-19.
The latest figures put the positivity rate in coronavirus tests below 3.5%.
Precisely, this pace of reopening was criticized today by the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, who asked state authorities to “re-evaluate” the situation and reduce the speed of reopening.
After mentioning the increase in capacity in the interiors of restaurants to 50%, De Blasio assured that it was time to stop and wait to see how the contagion curve evolved, taking into account the appearance of new, more aggressive variants of the covid -19, like the British or the Brazilian, the latter detected in New York, for the first time, at the weekend.
