Despite an increasing number of reported corona infections, public schools in New York City are expected to reopen soon. In addition, the aim is to increase the number of days on which the children have classroom instruction, said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday.
The announcement is a U-turn: just less than two weeks ago the mayor announced that the schools in the country’s largest school district would be closing again due to the corona pandemic.
According to De Blasio, the first primary schools should reopen on December 7th. How the opening of the higher school levels should take place is still being worked out, said the mayor. “We feel confident that we can ensure safety in schools.”
Schools in New York had already closed completely in the spring. New York was one of the first school districts to reopen classes in September. De Blasio announced in the summer that schools would close again if 3 percent of all coronavirus tests in the city were positive over a period of seven days. That happened in mid-November, which is why he ordered the closure. De Blasio emphasized that this fixed number has now been deviated from.
In the first phase, around 190,000 of the more than one million students in New York’s public schools could get back into classes. However, many parents had previously decided to let their children study from home.
