“From worst to first,” say the New Yorkers – that is, “from worst to first,” as US correspondent Angelika Ahrens reports. New York was an epicenter of the corona pandemic over a year ago, and now a lot is being opened and relaxed there too.
Over a year ago there were several hundred corona deaths per day in New York, the metropolis on the US east coast was one of the epicentres of the pandemic. But now it is opened and many regulations are relaxed. More than half of all adults are vaccinated, the positivity rate among those tested is less than one percent.
“It has been the first day for over a year that we no longer have to wear a mask,” reports US correspondent Angelika Ahrens in an interview with PULS 24 anchorwoman Alina Marzi. In addition, the capacity limits in the bars and at events have been raised to 100 percent – all seats can be occupied.
“Almost anything is possible again,” says Ahrens. The cinemas are open, the subway runs for 24 hours again and you can go to the jazz club again. Only the big musicals would need a lead time – but the first ones are already fully booked for after that.
How did that work?
“New Yorkers have learned to live with the pandemic,” says Ahrens. For over a year there had been a restrictive mask requirement, about which there was no discussion. The catering and sports facilities were only opened gradually, for a long time alcohol was only served when food was ordered and New York had agreed well with the surrounding states. To this end, the New Yorkers have practiced consistent “social distancing” and testing.
