On Friday, August 14, 2020, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced good news. New York City museums are now authorized to open their doors subject to compliance with precise specifications. Cultural centers and aquariums are also affected by the measure applicable from August 24, 2020.
Museums: capacity limited to 25%
- In order to allow visitors to comply with social distancing rules, these cultural establishments will have to limit their clientele to 25% of their capacity. The tickets will thus be distributed over different time slots to facilitate visitor traffic. Hydro-alcoholic gel will be made available and visitors’ temperatures will be taken at the entrance. The mask is always required inside these covered spaces.
- While the MET Museum has announced its reopening for August 29, 2020, most museums have not yet officially announced their reopening date. The MoMa, the Whitney and the Museum of the City of New York have not yet announced their reopening date given the recent nature of the governor’s announcement. We will continue to update the list of open museums as we go. If you are interested in a particular museum, do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
Covid-19: a rather optimistic context in New York City
- This news appears to be a relief following the announcement of phase 4 of deconfinement. Indeed, the museums were to remain closed until further notice. For a week, the rate of positive cases has remained low at less than 1% (0.85% Friday, August 14, 2020). While the interior spaces of restaurants remain closed to customers, terraces flourish along New York sidewalks. New Yorkers seem to appreciate this little taste of Dolce Vita which does not hide the calm of the city for the month of August.
- For some, consuming local has even become a political act. Supporting small businesses is essential in view of the financial losses that they have had to assume. Respecting health rules will remain key to continue to maintain an economy weakened by 4 months of hibernation.
