A Bronx off-road cyclist suffered severe burns when his bike caught fire after hitting a New York City Park Department vehicle, cops said.
The violent crash happened at East 138 Street and Willow Street in the Mott Haven section around 8 p.m., officials said.
The driver slammed into the back of a New York City Department of Parks and Recreation vehicle and became trapped under his bicycle – which burst into flames, according to the NYPD.
He was transported to Harlem Hospital where he was in critical condition Saturday night, police said.
The patient suffered burns to most of his body and was not wearing a helmet, sources told the Post.
Driving a dirt bike or ATV is illegal in all five boroughs because many drivers lack insurance or proof of registration, police say.
“They are not only a nuisance and an annoyance to us, but they are extremely dangerous,” Mayor Eric Adams said last week at a press conference in Brooklyn. City officials razed and bulldozed nearly 100 vehicles confiscated at the event.
The bikes were destroyed rather than sold or given away to prevent them from ending up on city streets, the mayor said.
