Special mobility in New York during the UN General Assembly due to the global situation and the situation both regarding Ukraine and relations with Russia, as well as the explosive situation in the Middle East.
Yesterday, Sunday during his speech at the New York Summit, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted, among other things, that “there are global threats that require global solutions”.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his appreciation to the Secretary General and the coordinators of the Pact for the Future, stressing the urgent need to take action for sustainable development, peace, security and global governance.
“At this time, this reaffirmation, the ‘back to basics’ of the UN Charter, such as the peaceful resolution of disputes with respect to International Law, was necessary.
The private meetings of the political leaders also gain particular interest.
Mitsotakis Erdogan meeting on Tuesday
As reported, the meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will take place on Tuesday (September 24), at 11:40 (local time; 18:40 Greek time), in a hall of the main building of the United Nations Organization.
The meeting will be attended by both foreign ministers as well as the directors of their diplomatic offices.
The agenda of the meeting will be tight, as meetings within the framework of the UN Summit do not allow for bilateral visits.
Meetings with American Jewish organizations
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met, on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, with representatives of American Jewish organizations.
During the meeting, international and regional developments were discussed with an emphasis on the latest developments in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.
The prime minister reiterated Greece’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself, adding that there is a need to immediately reach a ceasefire agreement that would allow the release of hostages and the distribution of more humanitarian aid to civilians in the Palestinian enclave.
Meetings of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis
Starting his contacts, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, took part on Sunday in the Ministerial Working Dinner for the Middle East, which was attended by Arab and European Foreign Ministers.
On Monday, September 23, Mr Gerapetritis will participate in the Ministerial Meeting of the informal group of Friends of the Western Balkans, in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Western Balkans.
Subsequently, he will participate in a Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union, the agenda of which includes the developments in the Middle East and Ukraine.
On the margins of the work of the General Assembly, Mr Gerapetritis will have separate bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Bolivia, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs will also meet with his counterpart from North Macedonia, Timco Moutsunski, at the offices of the Permanent Representation of Greece in New York.
Turkish mobility
Despite the fact that the Turkish president’s schedule in New York remained unclear until his departure, it seems that the meetings he will have on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly will be dense and interesting. Also, almost all meetings with other leaders will take place at Turkey House, a 36-story skyscraper owned by the Turkish state and home to Turkey’s permanent commission to the UN.
Yesterday, immediately after his arrival in New York, Erdogan met with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, two leaders who maintain close ties with the Turkish president.
Last night, Erdogan attended the dinner hosted by the Turkish American National Coordinating Committee (TASC) at the Turkey House. In his speech, among other things, the Turkish president said that the Russia-Ukraine war has turned into a great human tragedy. He referred to Turkey’s successful negotiation of a temporary peace in the Ukrainian but, he said, some lobbies did not want these efforts to achieve their goal.
He also referred to his country’s relations with the US. He emphasized that “regardless of who becomes president in this election, our view of America and our high-level dialogue will not change. Turkey is one of NATO’s strongest allies, but we are not neglecting the East, he said, adding that he is determined to strengthen dialogue with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and the ASEAN association.
Today, Recep Tayyip Erdogan will address the UN General Assembly, where he is expected to criticize the situation in Gaza and Israel’s stance, and will continue his bilateral meetings with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Iranian President Massoud Pezeskian and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whom he will meet this evening. Tomorrow, he will meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky and also with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
On Wednesday, he will see Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Zia al-Sudani, while on Wednesday night the Erdogans will attend a reception hosted by President Biden and his wife. It remains unknown if there will be any meeting with the American president.
