New York Mets: Max Scherzer suffers back thigh injury

PORT SAINT LUCIE, Fla. — Max Scherzer of the New York Mets is injured in the back of his right thigh, and it’s unclear when he’ll be able to return to the mound.

Anticipated as a strength, the rotation of the Mets now seems fragile. On Friday, the club announced that Jacob deGrom will have to sit out for a long period with a shoulder injury.

Scherzer was scheduled to take part in a mock game on Saturday.

The Mets will begin the regular season Thursday in Washington. Manager Buck Showalter said he remains hopeful that he can give the ball to his ace at that point.

The 37-year-old Scherzer was awarded the Cy Young in 2013, 2016 and 2017.

Scherzer agreed to a three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets.

He also played with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, Nationals and Dodgers.
