New York Met stage curtain auctioned off

New York Met stage curtain auctioned off

British auction house Bonhams is offering for a few hundred thousand dollars a piece made by Marc Chagall

After years of design, the Metropolitan Opera in New York (Met) opened in September 1966. The artist painter Marc Chagall created two frescoes for the entrance to the building. He once again contributes to the famous New York opera by conceptualizing a curtain for the production of one of the first Met pieces in 1966: The Magic Flute by Mozart. The piece, as artistic as it is monumental, measures more than 19 meters high and 13 meters wide …

The curtain designed by Marc Chagall belonged to a wealthy businessman who left it for lack of space. If, on the contrary, you have sufficient space to accommodate an object of such value, Bonhams offers it up for auction. The British auction house estimates that the Met’s property is trading between $ 250,000 and $ 450,000.

Nice blow then for the famous and prestigious British auction house. It remains to be seen who will have the stature to afford this mythical stage curtain, formerly owned by the New York Met?
