The Northwell Health care network, New York State’s largest private healthcare provider, fired 1,400 of its workers for refusing to receive the coronavirus vaccine, a company spokesperson confirmed.
The measure taken by the company comes after a mandate in the state of New York went into effect on September 27 that obliges the 650,000 health workers in the region to be vaccinated against covid-19.
“Northwell believes that having a fully vaccinated staff is an important step in our duty to protect the health and safety of our workers, our patients and the communities we serve,” said a company statement, according to local media.
Northwell, which so far employed about 76,000 people, also said he regretted the loss of employees under any circumstances, but that as New York’s largest provider of medical services, it has a “special responsibility to protect the health” of its patients.
The company therefore stated that 100% of its employees are now vaccinated after a “swift and aggressive stance” to comply with the regulations imposed in the state of New York, and stressed that its services have not been affected by this. mass layoff.
Northwell operates Lenox Hill Hospitals in Manhattan; the Long Island Jewish and LIJ Forest Hills, in Queens, and the Staten Island University Hospital.
