New York Mayor Warns that Migration Crisis will ‘Destroy’ the City

Eric Adams, Democratic mayor of New York (United States), affirmed that the migration crisis “will destroy” the city. The American megalopolis receives more than 10,000 new economic migrants and asylum seekers per month.

Every month, New York welcomes 10,000 new economic migrants and asylum seekers. A phenomenon which “will destroy” the city according to Eric Adams.

“Never in my life have I been confronted with a problem to which I saw no end,” said the mayor of the American megalopolis on Wednesday evening, during a public debate.

In a year and a half, New York, a city already populated by 8.5 million inhabitants, has seen more than 110,000 migrants settle within its walls. Some of them are notably sent by Republican governors, who charter buses or planes to send migrants to New York, Washington or even Los Angeles.

Comments criticized

New York, by law, is obligated to provide shelter, food and care to anyone seeking asylum.

Thus, Eric Adams, a former African-American police officer, asked for help from the federal government to deal with this migration crisis. “The compassion of New Yorkers may be unlimited, but our resources are not,” he already said in August.

His new statements on Wednesday earned him strong criticism from associations defending the rights of migrants.

Like the New York Immigration Coalition, which accused him Thursday of “blaming the mismanagement of newcomers (…) on vulnerable people in search of security and opportunity.”

“This dangerous speech is something we would expect from a far-right politician,” the Coalition for the Homeless and Legal Aid Society associations also reacted in a joint statement.
