New York, Jan 27 (EFE).- The beating of a young black man from Memphis by several police officers, who ended up dying, constitutes “an abomination,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams, himself an Afro-American.

“The brutality we saw in that Memphis video is an abomination,” Adams said on his Twitter account shortly after the footage was released in which the young black man Tire Nichols appears surrounded by a group of police officers who beat him with batons. punches and kicks while on the ground.

That beating “undermines the very system of laws we believe in,” Adams wrote, concluding: “This violence must be confronted with justice for #TyreNichols.”

Previously, Adams had participated in a collective call of White House officials with the mayors of 16 cities in the country against possible protests this weekend after the Memphis Police published the videos showing the beating of Nichols.

In the video, Adams called on city residents to act peacefully if they wish to protest this weekend: “If you need to express anger or outrage, do it peacefully,” she said in the video.

Adams added that the city’s Police Department is already “fully prepared” to allow residents to exercise their right to protest.

The most graphic video is the one captured by a surveillance camera on a lamppost, where it is seen from above how the agents kicked, some of them in the head, and hit Nichols with a baton.

The attorney general of the United States, Merrick Garland, promised this Friday that there will be an investigation into the death of Nichols at the hands of five police officers in Memphis (Tennessee) and asked that any protests that there may be about this event be peaceful.

Five former agents are in custody and face various criminal charges in the death of Nichols, who was arrested on January 7 for an alleged traffic violation. EFE
