New York mayor requires vaccination in private sector | Coronavirus what you need to know

In New York, all employees working in the private sector must be vaccinated against the corona virus before December 27. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this on Monday.

The mayor goes further than President Joe Biden with this. He wanted to give employees in companies with more than 100 employees until January 4 to be fully vaccinated. However, that decision was overturned by a federal appeals court.

“In New York, we decided to launch a preemptive strike against the coronavirus and do something really decisive to stop its spread and its dangers,” de Blasio said. In total, the vaccination obligation applies to approximately 184,000 companies, businesses and shops.

From December 14, children between the ages of 5 and 11 must also demonstrate that they have received one vaccine dose before being allowed into restaurants and theaters. Adult visitors must be double vaccinated from December 27 unless they have been vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson. From January 4, New Yorkers over the age of 12 will even have to show proof of triple vaccination.

It is one of the last achievements of the Democratic mayor, who will be succeeded on January 1 by party colleague Eric Adams. Adams’ spokesman has meanwhile said that he will evaluate the measure once he is mayor.

The omikron variant of the coronavirus has since been discovered in at least fifteen American states, including New York state. De Blasio calls the timing of the new variant “terrible in view of the winter months”.
