According to Mayor de Blasio, the explosion in New York was an attempted terrorist attack. The detonation was triggered by an explosive device attached to the body of the arrested suspect.
Just over two hours after an explosion occurred in a pedestrian tunnel that connects Times Square with the bus station in Manhattan, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed the fears: “It was an attempted terrorist attack.”
The perpetrator, who is now known by name to the police, deliberately detonated a technically less sophisticated explosive device, a kind of pipe bomb, on his body and injured himself in the abdomen and hands in the process. Three other passers-by also suffered injuries, none of which were life-threatening.
Police forces have now searched the alleged perpetrator’s home in Brooklyn, New York, for more information.
Explosion in the middle of rush hour
The New York Police Chief confirmed that the explosion occurred around 7:20 a.m. The area, the most important hub for morning rush hour traffic in New York, has been cordoned off over a large area, but according to the latest information, the bus station is now open again.
Anti-terrorist units were stationed at every neuralgic point in the city.
The explosion led to a large-scale deployment of the police and fire brigade.
