New York Mayor Eric Adams made a gaffe regarding the September 11, 2001 attacks by declaring that “All» can happen in “the best city in the world”, including a “plane crashes into the (World) Trade Center».
«New York. It’s a place where we wake up every day to experience it all: between a plane crashing into our (World) Trade Center towers and someone celebrating the opening of a new business», Launched Eric Adams during a Sunday interview on local television, PIX11, which asked him to take stock of the year. “It’s a very, very complicated city and that’s why it’s the best city on the planet.“, he added.
Questioned Monday by AFP, a spokesperson for the municipality did not withdraw the councilor’s comments. The jihadist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States (2,977 deaths in total) brought New York to its knees, after the two towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan were destroyed by two planes rushed by Al-Qaeda. He is Mr. Adams’ distant predecessor, Rudy Giuliani, who led New York City at the time and helped turn it around.

Dealing with multiple crises
Eric Adams, in power since January 1, 2022, is a former police captain strong on the right wing of the Democratic Party and the second African-American mayor in the history of New York. He is grappling with several crises that are weighing down his popularity: he is the target of a civil complaint for accusations of sexual assault when he was a police officer in 1993 and is splashed by an investigation by the federal police, the FBI, into the financing of his electoral campaign.
Finally, at 63, Eric Adams is in disagreements with the federal government in Washington over the influx of migrants and asylum seekers in New York over the past 18 months which threatens, according to him, to “destroy» this world city historically built on successive waves of immigration. “The weak point (by 2023) is clearly the 150,000 migrants and asylum seekers who represent an obstacle on the road to the city’s recovery», accused the mayor on PIX11.
