In the wheelchair races at the New York Marathon, the cracks of the Swiss top at one point have nothing to do with victory.
Until the race in New York, Marcel Hug‘s marathon record this year had been a success story: the Swiss could not be beaten over the 42.195 km at the Paralympics in Paris as well as in Berlin and Chicago.
This series broke in New York, where Hug has already won 6 times. Due to poor health, the 38-year-old could not get past the fourth place. About halfway through the race there was contact in the main group and Hug could only avoid a crash.
A grip was lost due to a bleeding finger
But in this event, Hug injured his finger, which began to bleed. This meant that the Swiss did not have enough grip on the bike anymore. Hug, who has always been on the podium in every part he has taken in New York since 2015, had to pull away at around kilometer 30.
Daniel Romanchuk (USA), who was just behind Hug in Chicago, won in 1:36:31 hours ahead of the British David Weir (+5 seconds) and the Japanese Tomoki Suzuki (+12). Hug lost 3:38 minutes to the best time.
Scaroni wins big, Schär in third place
Manuela Schär, winner of New York from 2017 to 2019, reached the podium in third place in the women’s race. However, she is 11:15 minutes behind the overall winner Susannah Scaroni (USA) and she is big. Schär was 33 seconds short of second place.
Nevertheless, Schär was happy with her race, although she told SRF with a wink: “Second place would also be very nice.” But the Swiss said: “I have to be happy with the race. I felt good.”
As always in New York, she had some trouble on the climbs. With her 3rd place, Schär was able to extend an impressive streak: When she has competed in New York since 2013, she has finished on the podium.
