Last qualifying race for the Vendée Globe 2024, the start of the transatlantic New York – Les Sables d’Olonne will be given on May 29, 2024. 40 boats should start and try to beat the record for the crossing, established at 9 days 16 hours 57 min 52 sec.
The 2ᵉ edition of the New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne will start from the United States on May 29th. Forty skippers are expected on the starting line, compared to 14 in 2016, for this transatlantic race.
“Given the dazzling technological development of boats in recent years, the reference time for the event, established by Jérémie Beyou in 2016 – 9d 16h 57min 52s – should also be shattered!”the organizers are already planning.
A few months before the start of the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, this crossing will be the last qualifying race. “This last confrontation will be an opportunity to determine the forces in the presence of the next round the world solo, non-stop and without assistance.”
To qualify for the Vendée Globe, skippers must participate in two qualifying races: one in 2022 or 2023 and one in 2024. “They must necessarily finish one of them, in a time not to exceed the winner’s time increased by 50%”, adds the organizers. The Transat CIC is the other qualifying race of 2024.
For this last selection race, which allows skippers to rack up miles with a view to their selection for the Vendée Globe, if there were more than 40 of them to qualify, the organizers have chosen to grant a bonus: for each mile covered , the sailors will count 1.5 thousand.
Before the start of the 3,200-mile race, New Yorkers will be able to enjoy “a big show in Manhattan Bay, organized on May 24, 2024 at the feet of the Statue of Liberty.
