New York Launches Program to Assist Asylum Seekers in Obtaining Employment

“For more than a year, I have called for federal assistance and support for New York as we manage the unprecedented number of asylum seekers coming to our state,” said Governor Hochul. “New York cannot continue to do this on its own. It is time for President Biden to act and provide New York with the help it needs to continue managing this current crisis.”

Earlier this week, Governor Hochul announced a $20 million investment to help expedite the filing process for more than 30,000 asylum seekers. This investment adds to the $1.5 billion the State has already committed to supporting New York City by providing funds for health care, lodging costs, National Guard personnel, legal services and voluntary relocation programs. The State has also loaned sites to New York City to use as temporary shelters that currently house more than 2,000 asylum seekers each day.
