Am 1. May 1931 has been one of the world’s most famous buildings opened – with one press of a light switch. Until 1972, the so-called Empire State Building (pronounced: empaer stäit bilding) in the US city of New York (pronounced: nju jork) was the tallest building in the world. One also says about such high-rise buildings skyscraperbecause they seem to reach into the clouds. Thousands of onlookers attended the opening of the city’s new landmark in 1931. A landmark can be a special building, mountain, or something similar that is instantly associated with a city or country.
90 years old
The building will celebrate its 90th birthday on May 1, 2021. Until 1972 it was the tallest building in the world. Then came many others, higher ones. The tallest building today stands in the city of Dubai, is called Burj Khalifa and is 828 meters high. So it’s almost twice the height of the Empire State Building, that 443 Meter measures – including the antenna.
Did you know that …
… the Empire State Building was built within 14 months? Around four floors were built per week.
… 3,500 workers helped on the construction site?
… the building has 102 floors and 6500 windows?
… the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world between 1931 and 1972?
… tourists love the building? Four million people visit it each year to take in the views of New York from the top. Because of Corona, far fewer people are coming to the city.
… before the corona crisis around 16,000 people came to work in the building every day? Because of the corona pandemic, many of them are currently working at home.
